Avoiding Contamination #3

The Microwave.
It tends to be full of crumbs doesn't it? I used to just pop our bread in on it's own to defrost it. Now I have to be regular in cleaning the microwave and always use a plate. This helps to avoid contamination.
I had better clean my microwave...!

  1. Even the little things become so much more complicated with food allergies don't they?

We are a little worried about our 5 month old at the moment. Not sleeping well, gaining very little weight (less than 100g per week), throwing up after every feed. She is mostly breastfed, but with 2 tablespoons Farex twice a day now (because we were hoping she would gain weight with solids). My eldest (now 3) was similar, suffering from reflux and slow weight gain but not to the extent of Miss 5 months.

Just wondering how old your kids were when you discovered their allergies? Was it when they went onto food, or were they affected by your diet when breastfed too?

  2. Hi Julie.
It's stressful when babies aren't growing as they should. My children had eczema when they were soley breastfed (as a reaction to what I was eating) so that was a sign (but you can't diagnose with that because eczema can be due to other reasons) and it was when they then had the allergen (6mths for my daughter, 12mths for my son) that a stronger reaction was noticed. My son was a bit of a spewer but it didn't affect his weight gain and I don't think it was necessarily related to his allergy. I don't think that reflux is related with allergy either from the small amount I have read.

I have friends who's son had lots of allergies but I think it was only when he went onto his limited diet that his weight gain struggled.

    What does your doctor think?

  3. I forgot to say, we were a little concerned about my daughter's weight gain for a little bit but probably when she was closer to 1 until she was 18mths but again, this was probably because of her limited diet - we already knew about the allergies.

  4. Hi Libby, thanks for the advice. She doesn't seem to have any ecezma or anything, so, I guess that might be a somewhat positive indicator against allergies?

Dr. never weighs our bubs unless he is giving medication and thankfully Miss 5 months hasn't been all that often. We get her weighed at the clinic nurse at our early childhood centre. She has always sort of said to "keep an eye on it" because Miss 5m has been gaining JUST under the 100g (and apparently 100g is minimum, though I remember with my eldest our paediatrician, who we haven't seen with this bub, said 20g/ day was minimum (e.g. 140g per week). Anyway, nurse thought because all other milestones, colour etc seemed okay, not to worry too much.

Last time we went though, the nurse miscalculated the dates, which I only worked out when I got home. Miss 5m had gained 380g and nurse calculated 4 weeks since our last visit. It had actually been 6 weeks. 380g in 6 weeks is really not enough. Unfortunately, with our move and everything else happening and a different system with the early childhood centre here (you need to make appointments), I won't be seeing a nurse until next Monday, so it will have been probably another month since we learned about the 380g in 6 weeks. We have introduced the Farex since then, so we are praying that will have helped, but we are still getting a lot of spewing after every feed and then frequent waking through the night, wanting to have a little suck, but not feeding properly!

It is funny, because Miss 5m was a DREAM baby for the first 12 weeks or so and was already sleeping through the night by 12 weeks, before things changed A LOT! Not sure if she is just very unsettled by the move(s) etc, or if there is more to it.

Sorry this is so long-winded. Thanks for your help anyway. Will let you know how we go!
